Sustainability has long been a core issue for facilities managers (FM’s) and as the increasing demands of regulation force energy and waste issues further up the corporate agenda, so the role of facilities managers as sustainability champions becomes ever more important.
Much progress has been made in recent years to embed sustainability at the heart of best business practice – not an easy task given the tough economic climate of recent years which has sometimes militated against the capital expenditure required.
Encouragingly, this year’s British Institute of Facilities Management (BIFM) Sustainability Survey – our eighth – shows that progress is continuing, with over 60% of respondents reporting that their organisation implements sustainability policies into business very effectively.
Equally encouragingly, facilities managers say that the regulatory drive towards more sustainability is increasing their engagement with the lost senior levels of the business.
